Choose Your Fats Wisely: A Dietary Checklist
There are actions you can take every day to keep your intake of trans fat (as well as saturated fat and cholesterol) low while still eating a nutritional and healthy diet.
Check the Nutrition Facts label to compare foods. Serving sizes are generally consistent in similar types of foods, so choose foods lower in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol. You should check all three nutrients to make choices for a healthful diet. 
Choose foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol by following this general rule of thumb: 5% Daily Value or less is low, and 20% Daily Value or more is high. Trans fat has no Daily Value, so keep the number of foods you choose containing trans fat as low as possible.

Choose alternative fats. Replace saturated and trans fats in your diet with mono- and polyunsaturated fats. Most dietary fats should come from sources of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids. 
Sources of monounsaturated fats include olive and canola oils. 
Sources of polyunsaturated fats include soybean, corn, and sunflower oils, and foods like nuts. 
Choose vegetable oils (except coconut and palm kernel oils) and soft margarines (liquid, tub, or spray) more often. The combined amount of saturated and trans fats in these products is lower than the amount in solid shortenings, hard margarines, and animal fats, including butter. 
Choose foods low in saturated fat, such as fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products, lean meats, fish, skinless poultry, whole-grain foods, and fruits and vegetables. 
Limit foods high in cholesterol, such as liver and other organ meats, egg yolks, and full-fat milk and milk products, like whole milk. 
Choose lean meats, such as poultry (without skin and not fried), lean beef and pork (with visible fat trimmed and not fried). 
Consider fish. Most fish are lower in saturated fat than meat. In addition, some fish, such as trout, herring, and salmon, contain omega-3 fatty acids. These are being studied to determine if they may even offer protection against heart disease. 
Butter v. Margarine

Some margarine contains more trans fat than butter — but that doesn't mean you should choose butter over margarine. The combined amount of saturated fat and trans fat, and the amount of cholesterol for butter is usually higher than it is for margarine.
Soft or liquid margarines contain a lower combined amount of saturated fat and trans fat and a lower amount of cholesterol. 
Nonstick cooking spray can be substituted for other fats when "greasing" the pan. 
Finding out when Eating out
Restaurants are not required to provide full nutrition labeling for their food products, unless nutrient claims are made, such as "Low Fat" or "Low Sodium." So, you may not learn how much saturated or trans fat is in a food unless you ask
To know which fats are being used in the preparation of the food you're ordering, remember to "ask before you order." 
Many fast food or chain restaurants have tables of nutritional content of their food products that they will provide upon request.

Cholesterol Levels and Fats

All fats in our foods are made up of building blocks of fatty acids and glycerol and their properties vary according to each combination.

There are two types of fat: saturated fat and unsaturated fat. The unsaturated group is additionally divided into two types: polyunsaturated fat and monounsaturated fat.

There is always a combination of each of the three types of fat (saturated, polysaturated and monosaturated) in any food, but the amount of each type varies greatly from one food to another.

Saturated Fats:
Saturated fats are the fats you should reduce the most as our bodies find it the most difficult to breakdown, and they dramatically increase the amount of cholesterol levels in our blood.

Saturated fats are found mainly in meats and fats such as butter and lard that are solid at room temperature. However, there are also saturated fats in foods with a vegetable origin like coconut, palm oils and some margarines. These margarine oils are labeled on food products as “hydrogenated vegetable oil” and should be avoided.

Unsaturated Fats: There are two types of unsaturated fats:

Polyunsaturated Fats:
	There are two types of polyunsaturated fats – those of vegetable or plant origin, such 	as sunflower oil, soft margarine and seeds; and those from oily fish such as herring, 	mackerel, and sardines. Both fats are usually liquid at room temperature. Small 	quantities of polyunsaturated fats are essential for good health and are thought to help 	reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood.

Monounsaturated Fats:
	Monounsaturated fats are also thought to have the beneficial effect of reducing the 	blood cholesterol level and this could explain why in some Mediterranean countries, 	there is such a low incidence of heart disease. Monounsaturated fats are found in 	foods such as oilve oil, rapeseed oil, some nuts such as almonds and hazelnuts, oily 	fish and avocados.

About one fourth of the fat we eat comes from meat and meat products, one fifth comes from dairy products and margarine and the rest from breads, biscuits, pastries and other foods.

It's easy to cut down on the obvious sources of fat in the diet, such as butter, oils, margarine, cream, whole milk and high fat cheese, but we also need to know about, “hidden” fats. Hidden fats can be found in foods such as cakes, biscuits and nuts. Even lean, trimmed red meats may contain as much as 10% fat.

By being aware of foods which are high in fats and particularly saturated fats, and by making simple changes to your diet, you can reduce the total fat content of your diet considerably.

Fat Burning Foods For Your Cholesterol Health

Hunger is satisfied and eradicated by adequately filling the stomach. Full stomach? No Hunger. Period. It's what you fill your stomach with that contributes to your overall cholesterol level. Fats are the biggest contributor, so it only makes sense that when trying to lower your cholesterol level, that you eat less fats and more of the “fat burning” foods. Here are just five of the many fat burning foods that you can eat to fill your stomach, lose weight AND lower your cholesterol levels.

Grapefruit:
There’s good reason for this old time favorite diet food to be a regular part of your diet. It helps dissolve fat and cholesterol. An average sized grapefruit has 74 calories, delivers a whopping 15 grams of pectin (a special element (or colloidal carbohydrate) linked to lowering cholesterol and fat), is high in vitamin C and potassium and is free of fat and sodium.

It’s also rich in natural galacturonic acid, which adds to its potency as a fat and cholesterol fighter. The additional benefit here is assistance in the battle against atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and the development of heart disease. Try sprinkling it with cinnamon rather than sugar to take away some of the tart taste.

Potatoes:
We’ve got to be kidding, right? Wrong. Potatoes have developed the same “fattening” rap as bread, and it’s unfair. The potato is an excellent food with which to lose weight and at about 85 calories per potato, a great source of fiber and potassium. The potato helps to lower cholesterol and protect against strokes and heart disease.

*Preparation and toppings are crucial. Steer clear of butter, milk and sour cream, or you’ll blow it. Opt for yogurt instead.

Spinach:
Popeye really knew what he was talking about! Spinach has the ability to lower cholesterol, speed up the metabolism and burn away fat. Rich in iron, beta carotene and vitamins C and E, it supplies many of the nutrients you need for a healthier life.

Buckwheat:
It’s great for pancakes, breads, cereal, soups or alone as a grain dish commonly called kasha. It has 155 calories per cooked cup. Research at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences revealed that diets including buckwheat led to improved blood sugar regulation, resistance to diabetes and lowered cholesterol levels. You cook buckwheat the same way you would rice or barley. Bring two to three cups of water to a boil, add the grain, cover the pan, turn down the heat and simmer for 20 minutes or until the water is absorbed.

Onions:
Flavorful, aromatic, inexpensive and low in calories, onions deserve a regular place in your diet. One cup of chopped raw onions has only 60 calories, and one raw medium onion (2.15” diameter) has just 42.

They control cholesterol, thin the blood and protect against cholesterol. Most of all, onions taste good and they’re good for you. Imagine a would without onions – it's the most used “flavoring” in recipes worldwide!

Maintaining Healthy Cholesterol Levels

Before you start eating your favorite, you might want to know whether you’re having too
much cholesterol. Few years ago, many were not aware what cholesterol level is but with
all the information everywhere people are becoming aware how their cholesterol levels
affect their lives. You have to remember that you are what you eat and what you eat has
something to do with your cholesterol. What is cholesterol? How will you know if you have
a healthy cholesterol level?

Cholesterol is a type of lipid needed in all the vital functions of the body. Every single one
of our cells is surrounded by cholesterol and its job is to insulate our nerve fibers. By
insulating the nerve fibers, the cholesterol ensures that the nerve signals are traveling
properly which is extremely important. Cholesterol also produces hormones which are
used to carry specific signals throughout the body.

Too much cholesterol in the body would increase your chances of heart disease. If you
have a high cholesterol level, you should bring it down. Even though cholesterol is
essential for our bodies to function properly, still it should be controlled properly.

What Is Your Cholesterol Level?
How do you know if your cholesterol levels are high? You have to consult your doctor; he or she will let you know exactly what your cholesterol level is. Knowing your levels is not really enough to tell whether or not you have a risk of heart disease, you need to find out what your
Lipoprotein levels is.

Lipoproteins are molecules which are especially designed to carry cholesterol around the
body. They are important because they control exactly how much cholesterol is in your
body. Now, there are two main types of Lipoproteins:

High Density Lipoproteins
Low Density Lipoproteins

The one which you really need to be aware of is Low Density Lipoproteins. A high level of
Low Density Lipoproteins means that you have a bad cholesterol that here is too much of it
to build up. High Density Lipoproteins  are used to carry cholesterol away from cells and to the liver and this is a GOOD thing!

The complicated thing about cholesterol is determining the right level for you. The doctor
has the ability to tell you what your cholesterol levels should be. The average person
usually should have around 4.0mmol/l but if you have a low density lipoprotein count, then
you should have around 2.0mmol/l. As mentioned, however, each person is different so
you need to get your levels checked to see exactly what you should be aiming for.

Cholesterol is important and you should know what your levels are to enable you to make corrections in your diet and exercise for a healthier and longer life. More and more people are developing heart disease due to high levels of cholesterol so it is advisable to go to your doctor to find out your cholesterol level.

There are many ways to improve your cholesterol level. Eating healthy food that can help
lower your LDL cholesterol level is the first choice for most people fighting the cholesterol “battle”. With a healthy diet, your body is protected from the damaging effect of cholesterol.

In addition, you should quit smoking, lose weight and exercise to raise your HDL cholesterol level.

Following a healthy, low fat diet can lower cholesterol levels. If healthy eating and
exercising doesn't work after about six months, your doctor may decide to add a cholesterol lowering medication to your daily regimen.

Dear Mr. Powell:
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reviewed the label and labeling of your Cheerios® Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal. FDA's review found serious violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) and the applicable regulations in Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations (21 CFR). You can find copies of the Act and these regulations through links in FDA's home page at http://www.fda.gov.

Unapproved New Drug
Based on claims made on your product's label, we have determined that your Cheerios® Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal is promoted for conditions that cause it to be a drug because the product is intended for use in the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of disease. Specifically, your Cheerios® product bears the following claims ort its label:

• "you can Lower Your Cholesterol 4% in 6 weeks"

• "Did you know that in just 6 weeks Cheerios can reduce bad cholesterol by an average of 4 percent? Cheerios is ... clinically proven to lower cholesterol. A clinical study showed that eating two 1 1/2 cup servings daily of Cheerios cereal reduced bad cholesterol when eaten as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol."

These claims indicate that Cheerios® is intended for use in lowering cholesterol, and therefore in preventing, mitigating, and treating the disease hypercholesterolemia. Additionally, the claims indicate that Cheerios® is intended for use in the treatment, mitigation, and prevention of coronary heart disease through, lowering total and "bad" (LDL) cholesterol. Elevated levels of total and LDL cholesterol are a risk factor for coronary heart disease and can be a sign of coronary heart disease. Because of these intended uses, the product is a drug within the meaning of section 201(g)(1)(B) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321 (g)P)(B)]. The product is also a new drug under section 201(p) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321(p)] because it is not generally recognized as safe and effective for use in preventing or treating hypercholesterolemia or coronary heart disease. Therefore,under section 505(a) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 355(a)], it may not be legally marketed with the above claims in the United States without an approved new drug application.

FDA has issued a regulation authorizing a health claim associating soluble fiber from whole grain oats with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease (21 CFR 101.81). Like FDA's other regulations authorizing health Claims about a food substance and reduced risk of coronary heart disease, this regulation provides for the claim to include an optional statement, as part of the health claim, that the substance reduces the risk of coronary heart disease through the intermediate link of lowering blood total and LDL cholesterol. See 21 CFR 101.81(d)(2),-(3). Although the lower left corner of the Cheerios® front label contains a soluble fiber/coronary heart disease health claim authorized under 21 CFR 101.81, the two claims about lowering cholesterol are not made as part of that claim but rather are presented as separate, stand-alone claims through their location on the package and other label design features. The cholesterol claim that mentions the clinical study is on the back of the Cheerios® box, completely separate from the health claim on the front label. Although the other cholesterol claim is on the same panel as the authorized health claim, its prominent placement on a banner in the center of the front label, together with its much larger font size, different background, and other text effects, clearly distinguish it from the health claim in the lower left corner.

Additionally, even if the cholesterol-lowering claims were part of an otherwise permissible claim, under 21 CFR 101.81, the resulting claim language still would not qualify for the use of the soluble fiber health claim. To use the soluble fiber health claim, a product must comply with the claim specific requirements in 21 CFR 101.81, including the requirement that the claim not attribute any degree of risk reduction for coronary heart disease to diets that include foods eligible to bear the claim. See 21 CFR 101.81(c)(2)(E). However, the label of your Cheerios® cereal claims a degree of risk reduction for coronary heart disease by stating that Cheerios® can lower cholesterol by four percent in six weeks. High blood total and LDL cholesterol levels are a surrogate endpoint for coronary heart disease; therefore, the cholesterol-lowering claims on the Cheerios® label attribute a degree of risk reduction for coronary heart disease because if total and LDL cholesterol levels decline, the risk of coronary heart disease declines as well.

Misbranded Food:
Your Cheerios ® product is misbranded within the meaning of section 403(r)(1)(B) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 343(r)(1)(B)] because it bears unauthorized health claims in its labeling. We have determined that your website www.wholegrainnation.com is labeling for your Cheerios® product under section 201(m) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321 (m)] because the website address appears on the product label. This website bears the following unauthorized health claims:

"Heart-healthy diets rich in whole grain foods, can reduce the risk of heart disease."

This health claims misbrands your product because it has not been authorized either by
regulation [see section 343(r)(3)(A)-(B) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 343(r)(3)(A)(B)]] or under authority of the health claim notificati6n provision of the Act [see section'343(r)(3)(C) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 343(r)(3)(G)]]. Although FDA has issued a regulation authorizing a health claim associating fiber-containing grain products with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease (21 CFR 101.77), the claim on your website does not meet the requirements for this claim. For example, under section 101.77(c)(2), the claim must state that diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in fiber-containing fruit, vegetable, and grain products may reduce the risk of heart disease. The claim on your website leaves out any reference to fruits and vegetables, to fiber content, and to keeping the levels of saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet low. Therefore, your claim does not convey that all these factors together help to reduce the risk of heart disease and does not enable the public to understand the significance of the claim in the context of the total daily diet (see section 343(r)(3)(B)(iii) of the Act [21 U.S.C.§ 343(r)(3)(B)(iiill].

In addition to the health claim authorized by regulation in 21 CFR 101.77, other health claims linking the consumption of whole grain foods to a reduced risk of heart disease have been authorized through the notification procedure in section 403(r)(3)(C) of the Act. Of those authorized claims, the one closest to the claim on your website states: "Diets rich in whole grain foods and other plant foods, and low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may help reduce the risk of heart disease.1" Although the claim on your website also concerns whole grains and reduced risk of heart disease, it is different from the authorized claim in significant ways. To meet the requirements of the authorized claim, the claim must state that diets that are (1) rich in Whole grains and other plant foods, and (2) low in saturated fat and cholesterol will help reduce the risk of heart disease) Instead, the claim on your website only states that diets rich in whole grains can reduce the risk of heart disease, with no mention of other plant foods or of low saturated fat and cholesterol.

"Including whole grain as part of a healthy diet may ... [h]elp reduce the risk of certain types of cancers. Regular consumption of whole grains as part of, a low-fat diet reduces the risk for some cancers, especially cancers of the stomach and colon."

This health claim misbrands your product because it has not been authorized either by regulation [see section 343(r)(3)(A)-(B) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 343(r)(3)(A)(B)]] or under authority of the health claim notification provision of the Act [see section 343(r)(3)(C) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 343(r)(3)(C)]]. Although FDA has issued a regulation authorizing a health claim associating fiber-containing grain products with a reduced risk of cancer (21 CFR 101.76), the claim on your website does not meet the requirements for the authorized claim.For example, under section 101.76(c)(2) the claim must state that diets high in fiber-containing grain products, fruits, and vegetables may reduce the risk of some cancers. The claim on your website leaves out any reference to fruits, vegetables, and fiber content. Therefore, your claim does not convey that all these factors together help to reduce the risk of heart disease and does not enable the public to understand the significance of the claim in the context of the total daily diet [see section 343(r)(3)(B)(iii) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 343(r)(3)(B)(iii)]].

In addition to the health claim authorized by regulation in 21 CFR 101.76, a health claim linking the consumption of whole grain foods to a reduced risk of certain cancers has been authorized through the notification procedure in section 403(r)(3)(C) of the Act. The authorized claim is: "Diets rich in whole grain foods and other plant foods ... may help reduce the risk of... certain cancers."2 Although the claim on your website also concerns whole grains and reduced risk of some cancers, it is different from the authorized claim in significant ways. For example, the authorized claim states that diets rich in whole grain foods and "other plant foods" may help reduce the risk for certain cancers. However,the claim on your website does not mention "other plant foods." Also, by using the language "especially cancers of the stomach and colon" the claim on your website emphasizes the relationship between whole grain foods and stomach and colon cancers as compared to other cancers, suggesting a greater degree of risk reduction or stronger evidence for the relationship between whole grain foods and risk of those two cancers. The claim authorized through the notification procedure does not emphasize the relationship between whole grain foods and stomach and colon cancer as compared to other cancers.

This letter is not intended to be an all-inclusive review of your products and their labeling. It is your responsibility to ensure that all of your products are in compliance with the Act and its implementing regulations.

Failure to promptly correct the violations specified above may result in enforcement action without further notice. Enforcement action may include seizure of violative products and/or injunction against the manufacturers and distributors of violative products.

Please advise this office in writing 15 days from your receipt of this letter of the specific steps you have taken to correct the violations noted above and to ensure that similar violations do not occur. Your response should include any documentation necessary to show that correction has been achieved. If you cannot complete all corrections before you respond, state the reason for the delay and the date by which you will complete the corrections.
